What Is Smart Film and How Does It Work?
Smart Film is an electronically controlled privacy film that changes from frosted to transparent when electrical power is applied. It uses polymer-dispersed liquid crystal technology, commonly known as PDLC, to control the way light passes through the film.
When Smart Film is switched off, the liquid crystals scatter light and create an opaque or frosted appearance. When the film is switched on, the crystals align and allow light to pass through, making the glass transparent.
Smart Film can be controlled using a wall switch, remote control, smartphone app, motion sensor, timer or building automation system. It can be installed on many existing glass surfaces, making it an effective alternative to replacing the glass with factory-manufactured switchable glass.

A commercial customer needed to create privacy for a glass conference room without replacing the existing glass or installing blinds.
The room was surrounded by clear interior glass panels that supported the company’s open-office design. However, employees needed visual privacy during management meetings, client presentations and confidential discussions.
Custom self-adhesive Smart Film panels were fabricated to match the dimensions of the existing glass. The film was electrically prepared before shipment and connected to a compatible transformer and wall control.
Once installed, the glass could change from clear to frosted within seconds. The company retained the appearance of its modern glass office while gaining privacy whenever it was required.
The installation also created a frosted surface that could be used for presentations and rear projection.
Smart Film and Smart Glass use similar PDLC technology, but they are designed for different types of projects.
